“Busyness” offers a scenario of a self-playing see-saw and a trumpet recording, while constantly attempt to balance in an imbalanced system. The artist was inspired by a scenario of a taxi driver stopped-by to play his trumpet while others were busying to pick up passengers in the Bund, Shanghai.
“Busyness” is sculpturally and kinetically inspired by Hong Kong Central Ferry Pier and the nearby Ferries Wheel, where he exhibits this commission work. The kinetic intervention has composed a seesaw-like motion within the system. The machine makes itself busy by constantly attempting to balance and resulting inclination to another side. The random movement of the circular weight triggers the inclination, while the 4 side moving weights tries to perform various decisions to counter or assist the inclination. The inclination also changes the pitch of a trumpet recording in real time.
